Bernie Hartog
Chairman MFI Australia
Born in Holland, at age 12 migrated to Tasmania, Australia with his parents and 7 siblings. Bernie loved the sea and was naturally entrepreneurial, and became a successful abalone diver/fisherman, but backslid from the faith of his Reformed family. He married Susie in 1974; they together have 7 children, with 15 grandchildren. Encountering the voice of the Lord on a hospital bed, Bernie was born again in 1977. Bernie and Susie at separate times, experienced the baptism with the Holy Spirit in 1979, transforming their lives, and were also water baptised in early ‘82.
From fisherman to become a “fisher of men”, Bernie gave up his livelihood of abalone diving, and dedicated himself to God’s Word, His will and His call. Bernie and Susie are the founding pastors of CityLIGHT Church, (formerly Mercy Community Church) in their large home 9 kms south of Kingston, Tasmania in August 1982. Purchasing 38 acres of land, they pioneered and established ‘a Holy Spirit-filled’ community church in Kingborough municipality, and along the way, released and assisted others to plant new churches in Tasmania (two of these are thriving). Kingston Christian School was also added to the church vision in 1986.
Bernie loves the Word of God, imparting vision and strength into the local church and the leadership team. In 2000, the church transitioned from having no small groups to become a "Celebration and Cell-based local church". Now discipleship happens, and a healthy leadership team is being developed. In 2004, God’s people were led to build and ‘crossover’ into a magnificent new meeting place a multi-purpose auditorium (600 seat) and additional facilities. Bernie passed on the baton of Senior Ministry to his ‘son in the faith’ of 23 years, two months later, in January 2005.
Bernie has been Tasmanian Regional Leader of MFI for 12 years, and now has received the new Leadership role from Bro Kevin Conner, in God’s call to apostolic ministry in the wider body of Christ, as Leader of MFI Australia, since March 2005.
